Paula J. Lawton, of Malden Bridge, NY, has been an active
painter all her adult life, taking many and varied watercolor,
portrait and oil classes. In 1975, with her daughter in high
school, she took a class in decorative art, and her direction
began to change. She started teaching the art form to her
neighbors and friends in a basement classroom in Latham, NY,
carrying a small amount of supplies to meet her students’
needs.
Paula and her husband, Bill, moved to Malden Bridge in 1976.
Bill was then a research scientist for NY State. He took
early retirement to become "chief chef and bottle washer"
for seminars at Windholme. Together, they have operated
Windholme, Folk and Decorative Art, offering three to five
day seminars, for over thirty years. Teachers from the
United States, Canada, Russia, and Australia have taught
at Windholme. Over the years, the Lawton home had been
turned from classroom to painter retreat, offering as
many as twelve seminars a year, and housing up to 21
decorative painters! Now they have downsized, holding daily
classes in NY and seminars at the Langrove Inn in VT.
Paula is a seasoned artist – teaching at many shops and
chapters throughout the county and Canada, at the national
conventions of the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP), and
"down under" in Australia and New Zealand. She has taken an
active interest in the national society, serving on the
Nominating, Education, and Certification committees. In
addition, she was the organizer, and first president of
the "Capitolers," the local chapter of the SDP and is
now serving as second vice president.
Paula will continue to teach and continue to be a student
until she can no longer paint. "It’s been a wonderful
life!"
